History

The foundation of the company
Start
In 1976 DPD was founded by 18 large German freight carriers. The aim of this joint venture was to set up a customer-oriented parcel transport system with improved service standards for business customers. The company's rapid growth indicates that there was strong demand for such an alternative to the post office and railways. In the year it was founded, DPD already transported 1,4 million parcels. Only four years later, in 1980, this number had already grown to 7 million. Today we ship 2 million parcels every single day.

Maximum flexibility, top quality and first-class service standards – these are the targets we set ourselves. From the very beginning the company was offering simple, fast and market-oriented transport for business customers at fair prices which were in line with market expectations.

The beginning
The early years
The first depots were set up shortly after DPD was founded. They were designed exclusively for parcel shipping. The foundation stone was laid for the company's own logistics network. In the summer of 1977 the head office was established in Aschaffenburg. From here the coordination of transport and system planning was carried out, and new functional areas were quickly added, including marketing, quality assurance and IT.

Success
The Eighties: market leadership
In the mid-eighties, DPD achieved market leadership among Germany's private parcel services.     Technical innovations and ongoing expansion of the company's product and service range ensured a systematic increase in the capacity of the transport and logistics system.

Experience
1995: the billionth parcel
On the 30th of August 1995 the big day had finally come: Parcel No. 1,000,000,000 went through our sorting equipment, which meant that in nineteen years we had safely transported one billion parcels to their destination. A great moment and at the same time, confirmation that the course we had taken was the right one.

Network
Internationality
DPD is gradually increasing the internationality of its brand and is building up a comprehensive network. The aim is to create an integrated logistics and information network under a single brand umbrella. Our seamless distribution system is the top-performing road network in Europe, and extends worldwide to the most important regions for business.

The group
2001: merge with GeoPost
The merge with GeoPost, a subsidiary of France’s La Poste, in April 2001, strengthened DPD’s long-term continuity, stability and future growth. This means that DPD is ideally equipped to compete in the market and has a solid position from which to expand: technological leadership ensured by continual innovation, combined with service leadership thanks to uncompromising customer-orientation. At the same time we are constantly expanding our capacity so that we stay ahead of the market all the time. 

Today
An impressive performance
With the transport of 2 million parcels a day in a seamless international network, DPD is one of the leading international express and parcel service providers. With over 500 depots in more than 40 countries, 22,000 employees and 15,000 vehicles are at the service of 200,000 business customers.
